The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects or “things” that can contain sensors, software, processing ability, or other technologies which then connect to and exchange data with other “things” and systems over the internet or another communications network. Each “thing” has a unique identifier (UID) and the ability to transfer data over a network without direct human interaction.
The IoT had its start in the more traditional fields of control systems, home & building automation, and wireless sensor networks and has grown to include machine learning, smart home devices, and appliances (such as light fixtures, security systems, thermostats, refrigerators, etc.) that can be controlled via smartphone or smart speaker.
